Hi,
Looks like a very useful service you have. Thank you.

Strange request; I need to know who was living at 276 Albertbridge Road, Belfast in 1923. I have a record of my family arriving in Southampton and the manifest says they intend to stay at this address. Can you help?

Thank you again,

Ric

Thank you for your site.

I am chasing a very elusive g-grandfather called George Frederick Ritter von Swan (Schwan) who is reputed to have been a teacher of languages in the Friends' School, Lisburn - regrettably their records no longer exist [and also, this may well have been only a part time position].

I have found him listed as living in Linda Cottage, Dunmurry in 1865 which agrees with information on my grandfather's birth certificate.

I have also found on your site, a Schwan, Kell & Co who were Linen Merchants in Belfast in 1861 who may or may not have been the same man or a relative.

So, thanks very much. I would also appreciate any information or hints that anyone reading this might have.

Maris Valentine

I just stumbled across your site. It is fabulous! I have been researching my Wylie ancestors for a long while. My great, great grandfather is William Wylie born 1845 in Northern Ireland and married Nancy? born in 1846. They immigrated to Philadelphia, PA on the ship Canadian in 1891. I am trying to find Nancy's maiden name. Also, William's siblings and parents. Their children are Susan, Annie, Andrew, Alexander and William John. William john is my great grandfather and was born in Cookstown, County Tyrone. Would love any info if anyone has a clue.

The page on the Franconia reminded me of an event in my childhood when my family emigrated to Windsor Ontario in the early Fifties. Yes we sailed from Liverpool to Quebec on 22nd.April 1953 on the Franconia with me aged 9 but I still remember the occasion and also have a menu from the voyage.
Unfortunately it did not work out and we returned later that year on the Empress of Australia of Canadian Pacific and I have momentoes of that also after 57years. Thanks for joggingthe memory

Interesting information; will absorb in the near future.

My interest is to find a "Gray" or "Grey" who was the mistress of General Mervyn Archdall , 1763 - 1839, of Castle Archdale and bore him three children, a son (Henry Gray, subsequently Henry Gray Archdall) and two daughters, Jane and Elizabeth. Henry would have been born about 1798 - 1800 and the girls later.

My Great Grandfather, Patrick Cox, opened a drapery shop at 173 York St. around 1882. His father, Thomas, as a widower and retired Head Constable of the Irish Constabulary, travelled to Belfast from Kilkenny circa 1882 with his son PatrickAt some time therafter, according to family lore, Thomas married a woman from Co. Down and has never been heard of since. I recently did some research on the RIC archives in Kew, a fantastic resource, and discovered that Thomas died on 4 Sept 1886 in the Newtownards District and that a pension was paid to his widow Ellen in January 1887 and there the trail goes cold again as we have no maiden name for Ellen. I have found a marriage record of a Thomas Cox and an Ellen Couch/Cooche in Belfast in 1884, though the age quoted fior Thomas Cox is 56 rather than 76 and he is recorded as being a bachelor. My father, who has just celebrated his 86th birthday is determined to convince himself that this is the correct Thomas Cox, though I am not so sure. The RIC records clearly show that Thomas' Cox's pension which was paid to him in Belfast in 1883/4 was paid to him in Newtownards from April 1885. I would be very grateful for any clues on where Thomas and Ellen might be buried. Civil records don't seem to have the information. Thank you Mary for your advice and thanks to Jim Herlihy for valuable pointers on the RIC.
