2) 1st August 1958 Postmark Ischgl to Mr. H. D. Deering, 31 Kincora Avenue,
Belfast, Northern Ireland - Thurs. This is our hotel '#4 above' in
the winter. We were wakened this morning by cow-bells. The cows are taken up
every morning and find their own way back in the evening. They wear cow
bells. I have climbed two mountains, a very short way up each and long
rests. When we arrived here last night there was a power-cut. The courier
said a cow had scratched her back on one of the wires. Going a tour to Italy
to-morrow. Bea
3) 6th August 1958 Postmark Ischgl to Mrs. A. Deering, 31 Kincora Avenue,

colder but we were quite happy indoors. The scenery is wonderful. We spend
our last night here (to-morrow) on the way back - then the long long trail.

If you've a minute to spare for a tale, that goes over mountain and moorland
and dale,
Come join us in Scotland as onwards we tail, Bound for the Trossachs and
sweet Aberfoyle.
The clouds of the morning, their days work well done,
with substance receding, make way for the sun,
Now hillock looms nearer, now mountains rear higher, the leisurely river,
the churchyard and spire.
Strathaven behind us and Hamilton too, whose grand
mausoleum has come into view,
Soon Motherwell passes and Carfin Grotto, while coalfields and inevitable
stag-heaps come and go.
Falkirk quietly passes then come Bannockburn, where
Robert the Bruce bade his enemies turn,
Stirling's fine buildings soon pass out of sight, a bridge on our left hand,
a bridge on our right.
Then the Forth is behind us and high Wallace Tower,
Guarding yesterday's glories, to-day's humble flower,
The fine Bridge of Allan and sweet Allan Water, where hapless the fate of
the miller's fair daughter.
Then hayfields and hedgerows and on into Doune? a gem
seen by moonlight, still jewel at noon,
For old Scotia's grandeur, in woodland and heath, is no more of a myth than
the fast flowing Teith.
Steep well-wooded hillsides are Callanders walls, the
cascading waters are called Brachlinn Falls,
The onrushing Leny? flows down at full spate, to where the loch waters of
Vennethar wait.
Ben Ledi stands sentinel aloof stately proud, whether
sun id her coronet or grey mist her shroud,
Loch Achray lies sleeping, her fern banks and slopes guard her place of
repose keep her sorrows, her hopes.
The Pass of the Trassachs, Loch Katrine demure,
By divine inspiration of lordly allure,
In the realm of mountains, Loch Drunkie? lies low, ferns and bracken in
undeterred profusion grow.
Aberfoyle has its mountains, its auld brig, its new,
its assets and many, it defects are few,
For the Lord her creator, to Scotland was kind, so she speaks of the Touch
and she breathes of His Mind.
