relatives of Mr. Andrew Torrens, whose death occurred yesterday in his home
at 22, Trevelyan Terrace, Duncairn Gardens, Belfast. The deceased gentleman
was well known in the public life of the city, having been for several years
the vaccination officer and Children's Act inspector under the Belfast Board
of Guardians. ~ A Violent Hailstorm. Barcelona, Thursday. A
hailstorm of unusual violence broke over various parts of Catalonia to-day,
causing considerable damage to crops. Number of birds were killed by the

marriage yesterday. Mrs. Gerald Ewing was matron of honour; ... Mr. Raymond
Boyd best man, and Mr. Derek Johnston groomsman ... Misses Maureen Cooke and
Penelope ... - Ulster Weddings. Johnston Acheson. The marriage was
solemnised yesterday at the McCracken Memorial Presbyterian Church, Belfast,
of Mr. Alexander Nigel Greenfield Johnston, younger son of Dr. and Mrs. J.
G. Johnston, Clovelly, Lisburn, and Miss Heather Jean Acheson, younger
daughter of Dr. H. M. Acheson, London, and Mrs. Acheson, Shandarragh Park,
Belfast. The Rev. J. F. Park, Stormont Presbyterian Church, and the Very
Rev. Dr. T. M. Johnstone were the officiating ministers, and Mr. W. R. A.
Anderson was at the organ. The soloist was Mrs. Meta Grainger. The bride,
who was given away by her cousin, Dr. G. C. Lyttle, O.B.E., was in a trained
gown of white satin, with net veil held in position by a coronet of French
orange blossom. Her bouquet was composed of cream roses, gladioli,
stephanotis, lily of the valley and white heather. The matron of honour,
Mrs. Gerald Ewing, and the bridesmaid, Dr. Mona McQuitty (cousins of the
bride) wore full-skirted gowns of buttercup yellow organza over poult; while
the trainbearers - the Misses Maureen Cooke (niece( and Penelope Davis
(cousin of the bride) - were in Kate Greenaway dresses of buttercup yellow
organza with gold sashes. The best man was Mr. Raymond Boyd (cousin of the
bridegroom)

Audrey. - blue ink: I was going to write a long letter
and here it is 5.30 p.m. Wednesday and I have 16 letters to write and Church
decorations loom ahead. I do the screen? which stretches across N. Aisle,
Naves and S. Aisle. I make the wreathes at home and put them up on Saturday.
I loved your newsy letter but was so to hear of so much sickness. I do hope
you will have no more foot trouble and that young Jasper? John will make a
complete recovery. Congratulations to Jasper on having made a complete
recovery from shingles. Barney has had a good deal of pain with his
arthritis. The very hot weather and now the E. winds have played it up?
Hilda is no better, I grieve to say. Yes I know and love Clary/Clory? I
don't believe the Dimorphotheca would grow in our wet soil. But many thanks
for the offer.

which I had intended to answer at length but I was seedy? for ten days and
not capable of doing more than had to be done so I am even more behindhand
than usual. Do let me know if you can come here, it would be such fun. If
not I will have another sitting? in the Paddington Hotel with you! I do hope
your cataract will be able to be done soon, you must be longing to get it
all over. The very best of luck with it. Hortiach is in a wooden box with
earth in the bottom and leaves on the top in our cloakroom as being the
coldest place in the house. I hope he will sleep till March. Isn't it
exciting Barney has given me a seat in Marshall & Snelgroos? window for the
Coronation and we are jointly giving his niece and godchild pf us both the
one next to it. I have never seen a show and am thrilled. Best love Audrey

you all and the Best of Luck in 1951. I had been meaning to write but as
usual have not found time. I am now scribbling furiously after Barney has
gone to bed in the kitchen. I can spread myself over the table and it is
warm with the domestic boiler, but it's hours past bedtime? I loved your
July letter. It told me all the things I wanted to know. I was so glad to
hear how much fitter you were. Hilda and Jack are now settled in a house at
Northam near Bideford 43 miles away. It is so nice having them nearer. This
year has been wretched for Barney's arthritis but he never gives on and I
don't think it is much worse. Ever so many thanks for your lovely card and
letter. Let me know if you can come to the Salonika Reunion and I will try
to get somebody to look after B. I cant leave him alone. Best love Audrey
3) 24-2-59 Dearest Em, It was good to get your letter and
charming card. I seem to have been overwhelmed with Christmas preparations
this year. I got off parcels and cards and put on one side ten I wanted to
write to - yours being one and this is the result. I hope you will love your
new home and be very very happy in it. This brings much love every good wish
for Happiness this Christmas and in the years to come. You must get the
young doctors to take on part of the garden. Barney's arthritis is very
achey but he refuses to give, to my horror I found him up a stepladder the
other day pruning a rose! Our garden is waterlogged and has slugs by the
millions. The worst year of the ten we have been here. Hilda and Jack have
sold Witten Lodge and moved into a smaller, compact house (an old one
divided). Hilda is terribly crippled and can't find a companion help to
"live in" She has just got an officers' widow to come from 11-6 every day,
but she ought to have somebody who would do breakfast and sleep there for
when Jack has a holiday. I should love to get to the Reunion but can't leave
Barney alone in the house. Much love Audrey
