Introduction

It has for a number of years been an ambition to do the area of County Donegal known as Inishowen.  For a long time it has been apparent that Inishowen had played a significant part in defending this country against invasion by Germany and I felt that it was time that these young men were recognised and thanked for what they had done.

It took an invitation by Mrs. White - Overton to get the ball rolling at last.

(details amended by grandson and are different from that in the book)

No loving voice was there to soothe,
To whisper low the parting vow,
No tender hand was there to smoothe,
Or wipe away the death dew from his brow,
Perchance he heard a comrade's prayer,
Ere death for ever sealed his eyes,
We may be here, our hearts are where,
A gallant British soldier lies.

this poem put in the Derry Journal for many years by Marjorie Cassidy, wife of Harry (left)

My cousin Angela and her husband Philip for driving all over the Portsmouth and Plymouth area looking for cemeteries.

My Gt. Uncles L Charles Henry Wray MM and Pte. John Wray are shown on the site and in the book as being the sons of Joseph Shelbourne Wray and Martha Frances Gardiner; however this is incorrect. These men were my grandpa's brothers and brothers also to Joseph Shelbourne Wray. Their parents were Joseph Wray and Rebecca Kincaid. I notice that there is a mention of two men, same name as being sons of Joseph & Rebecca but which gives no service record. This will be because they are one and the same as those given as sons of Joseph and Martha.

I had suspected there was a error when I was researching my family tree and I have had it confirmed by Baptismal Records and family knowledge.

I had managed to find Joseph & Rebecca on the 1901 census but not on the 1911 census, and at the latter both my grandpa William and Gt. Uncle John were living with Joseph and Martha and I think what has happened is that when John and Charles Henry enlisted they gave Joseph & Martha as next of kin owing to their own parents having died in the years between 1901/1911. This would account for Joseph & Martha being taken as their parents.
