Dear Mr. Wylie, I cannot image how much labor you have put into this site, but thank you very much. I am just beginning to search for my ancestors. My father's father died before I was born and I know nearly nothing about him. So far I have learned that he came through Ellis Island in 1913 as the young son of Thomas Harland. Thomas gave his wife, Mary's, address as "26 Limepark St. Ligoniel". I found that address in a couple of your registers, though it was listed as "vacant". I did find a Thomas in the 1901 (Names) page. He was listed there as a "hackler"; in the Ellis Island records as a "flax dresser". That seems similar enough to give me hope that these are the same person.

I hope to explore your site more thoroughly in the days to come.

Interesting site with lots of information.

I am attempting to acquire information on the history of a house I lived in when I was much younger. named Riverston House it was situated at the corner of Church Road and Brook Street in Holywood where the Motte is located. The address was 66, Church Road and at one time was inhabited by a Father Murphy but I do not know who built it or who owned the property prior to construction of the house.

Hi,
Someone gave me your web-site with a view to researching my Kirkwood ancestors. Could you give me any hints or refer me somewhere? All I know is that William Kirkwood (father James) married Mary Ann Smyth (father John) at the Belfast RO on August 14, 1848. Both said they were 21. Between 1862 and 1865 the family moved to the Manchester area where William died in 1865.
I've done a lot of research on English records, but don't know where to start in Ireland.
Anything!! would be appreciated.

To be honest I haven't checked out your website - that my project for the day! Thanks in advance.

This is a fabulous website. A lot of talent and effort has gone into it. I return to it periodically with the hopes of finding another informative gem.

Case in point, I discovered how my grandparents, who married in 1912, met each other. Your 1907 Mossley Street Directory shows their families were close neighbours.

Whow, what can I say. Don't know how exactly I ended up on your site but here I am now probably 4-5 hours later having exhausted my browsing ability for today anyway. I have many times attempted to start looking at my family tree, which by the way has very strong roots in Thames St as far back as the turn of the 19th century. I have had like so many Belfast folk had relatives killed during both world wars and I think you have just encouraged me finally to take up this particular mantle and discover where the family all started. I have a particular interest in militaria and loved all of the old photos, especially the ones from regiments with roots here, I have seen some of these displayed in various private locations around the province. Thanks for the insight and good luck with your own particular quest.

McLoskey, John born 1790 Ireland; was in Greenock, Scotland by 1830 married to Mary Ann Brooks (also born in Ireland). He was a successful merchant tailor in Greenock. He moved with family to Liverpool around 1850 and then back to a farm at Rostrevor, Co Down, Ireland before leaving for Australia. I am looking for information on his life and family in Ireland - particularly relatives today!

The article on Groomsport brings a tear to my eye. My grandmother was Sarah Clarke, the assistant at the school for many years. I note my father (Noel) Victor Bradley receiving a mention as 'proceeding to the grammar school' in 1942. My grandmother married James Bradley and they lived at 114 Donaghadee Road. My grandfather died when my father was just 14 and he had to leave Bangor Grammar in 1946 to go to sea with the Head Line as an apprentice to support the family. There were 5 children, my Aunt Verena (still alive in England aged 84), tow boys who died as young children, my late father and my Uncle Robin, still alive and living in Australia. I myself was brought up in my early years at 41 The Hill. Our neighbours were the Barnes at 39 and Fanny Waterson at 37. I was a true 'Port yen' - born and bred in the village and christened in the Presbyterian Church. I will be sending the link far and wide as family and friends will love the article.

Thanks to your wonderful resource I have now found what I believe to be my great great grandfather William Hyde, a mechanic, in Cullingtree Place, Belfast in 1852, and I think also his father Richard, a foreman at Mr. Harper's foundry in Wilson St.
Would love to hear from anyone who is searching for Hyde family in Belfast or surrounding area as I am not sure where the family originated but suspect as they married in Presbyterian churches they may originally have been Scots. Not sure how to check that out though so if anyone has ideas please let me know.

Re The Franconia passenger list (April 1955).

I am the “Master J A Davison” shown on the passenger list. Unfortunately the reference after my name to the autograph on the menu (next to Japan) is incorrect. I did not sign the menu, I believe it is the signature of a Mr. J De Vine – perhaps you can rectify that the next time you update the sheet.

My brother Bill (Master W F Davison) resides in Florida, I live back in the UK (returned in 1975) with my family. My father (Mr. W F Davison) passed away in Florida in 1992 and my mother Mrs. E E Davison passed away in 2002 also in Florida.

It was wonderful to see the names of long forgotten friends – friendships made on that voyage. We are still in touch with the Healey family (Mr. J & Mrs. Healey). They reside near my brother in St Petersburg.

It would be nice to hear from other fellow passengers.

I was given your details by a friend who collects war medals.
I am trying to find details of my father's service record but cannot find his regimental number.
He was in the T.A. in Belfast and was in an Ackack regiment near Larne when the war started. He often said he went on a 2 week training stint which lasted 6 years.
He served at Dunkirk in North Africa and Italy.
Is there anyway I can find his number. I have written to the army but they need this.

My husband's grandfather. Richard Emerson Taylor Sr. was born in County Down in 1859. He immigrated to New Jersey in 1875. He died in 1932 in Jersey City, New Jersey. I have for months now been searching for the address in Belfast of my great grandfathers wigmakers and perfumers late 1800 s. He came from France, surname Durand, and at one time lived in 25 Tates avenue Belfast. His son ,Bertie Durand, became a well known pianist, my grandfather.
I managed to find his memoirs from the Belfast Telegraph,1954. I'm not sure if you can help, but would be so grateful for any lead. I am also going to try and find out if I have any relatives in France, but don't know what area he came from. This would mean so much to me,

What a find! The McClellands left Ireland in 1847. My g-g-grandfather told my dad they came from Belfast in the County Down which always confused me & it is only recently I came to realize he probably meant Ballymacarrett as my Dad said he thought it might be "Bally M something." Had googled an ancestor's name, Gilbert Weir. Lo and behold he is mentioned twice in the 1861 Belfast Directory - in Queens Square where he was a muslin manufacturer and his home address of Lockview, Antrim Road.

For some time now I have owned a pamphlet advertising Robinson's Temperance Hotel, Belfast. On one of the back pages is an advertisement for Whitewell Hygienic Laundry. I have often wondered if it's still a going concern - from your site, I find that it was owned by a John Wilson whose office was at 8, Royal Avenue, Belfast. my grandad came from off the Falls Rd, Belfast. He was born John Magee 1884/5, I am trying without success to trace a birth for him. I had a search done and have 14 names, the problem is I don't know much about his family. I think his father was John and a carpenter, the family was Catholic. I tried to match some of the addresses to the street index but have no match. I know my grandad spent time in USA with an aunt, he was in the Merchant Navy, and he had something to do with dog racing in Ireland. He was living in Worcestershire from 1920 onwards. I don't know what else to try and would be grateful for any tips

I have found your site very helpful. My grand uncle lived at 6 White Street Belfast in 1927 and is in the directories from 1918 to 1925. His name was George ALLEN and he signed the Covenant in 1912 at Belfast. His parents were George ALLEN and Teresa Agnes (nee GREEN). If anyone has any information about him I would love to hear it. I have relatives on both sides who have emigrated from Ulster. Their names are "McCully" and "Moody". The John and Mary Moody, my g-g-grandfather, left Belfast in 1802 and went to Norfolk, VA, and my grandfather, Robert Allen McCully, left Irvinetown (nine miles north of Enniskillen) in 1886, as a sixteen year old.

Great site 10/10 for effort. A big help tracing my family history in Ireland. I was born in Belfast 1938. Funny thing I live in Victoria Ave Woodhull Spa. Lincolnshire. Our house was Headquarters for the Royal Ulster Rifles in 1944, before they went to Arnham, most to die. We still have their spirits here in 2008. Probably due to us remembering (Lots of flags on the day) those who fought for our freedom. We found under floorboards (Due to war damage) an officers cane, a bit bashed, also some family letters which we will try to pass on. I would like to hear from anyone who can help with information.
My Gt Gt Grandfather Charles Devlin had a Posting Establishment at 32, Chichester St in 1852. He was from Co. Londonderry but I have not been able to trace. I wonder if anyone can help or put me in the right direction. Many thanks.

You have done an awesome job with this. Joe Graham put me on to your website. He also put me in touch with relatives in Belfast. I have searched you streets directories in search of My Grandad Magees Family, they lived on Joy Street. I am also looking for The McKaig family they lived at 26 Stanfield Street Belfast in 1928 Moms sister Mary Collette Magee was born and 1931 that is the year my mom Geraldine Magee was born and the year is on mom's birth certificate. I cannot find any information on them. My Great Grand father David McKaig was a horse trainer, he quit training when a horses hoof put out his eye. Mom said he used to ride into Belfast from out in the country to train the horses. and then they moved into Belfast, but when I do not know. I have spent hours going through your website, I can find only a few with the McKaig name. Well enough of my rambling, I have enjoyed your website.

I am trying to find out more about my late mother's family. I have found the marriage of Andrew Grey and Isabella Lockhart , Belfast 1872 . His Father Edward Prior Grey was a hotel keeper of Arthur Sq. her Father John Lockhart , occupation Smith. Andrew and Isabella turn up in Manchester, Lancs in 1881 census . Isabella's address in Belfast was 18 Upton Street at the time of the marriage . Cannot seem to trace the family in Ireland though.

I found my maternal grandfather's address in 1910> I have been trying without much success to trace my ancestors> My paternal grandfather was called Noble Washington McIntosh., and his wife was called Gertrude Alice McIntosh (formerly Elliot). They lived at 22, Belmont St. in 1930, when my father was born, his name was Sidney Noble McIntosh. My maternal grandparents were called Alexander and Elizabeth Leebody (formerly Hutton). They lived at 32, Fox St. in 1924, when my mother was born. I lived in Methuen St. until moving to Lancashire with my family in 1969. If you have any information I would be very grateful. I was told about your site at a family history day at Perth Library.
My father was born in Belfast, but I have recently had my DNA tested and have been told that my ancestors probably came from Ayrshire. I know that about 1600 some of the Nisbets in Ayrshire took the wrong (losing) side in the covenanting wars, and after a couple were hanged, others emigrated to Northern Ireland and USA.
I assume all the (many) Nesbitts in NI will have come from the same source.

This is an excellent site, although I am a bit lost I am searching for my Hogg, Dunn and McCabe relations that came from Ireland and settled in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. My father was born in Cambrai St, Belfast in 1915. Both my grandparents were living in Whiteabbey before that, one side G. Grandfather Alexander Finlay , a bleacher with the Whiteabbey bleaching company, was from Belfast. I'm interested in tracing the Finlays and McCanns in Belfast, before 1877. My Gt Gt grandfathers were a Thomas Finlay (labourer) and Robert McCann a bleacher. Alexander F was living at Broadway, Falls Road, when he married Margaret McCann in 1877.

I'm happy to correspond and share info with anyone researching the same line. I am in the London area and have access to London archives and records.

it seems that every name I type in of my ancestors, lemmonwylie pops up with the same.
My g/father was Hans Cleland b. 1874. His father was Robert Cleland and mother Isabella Montgomery. Robert lived at Creevycarnanon, Kilmore and Isabella came from Rademon.

When Robert died, Isabella married Thomas Coburn and had 2 sons Samuel and David and perhaps more.

I'm a granddaughter of Henry McKee, Derryogue, Kilkeel. He went to New Zealand to farm in 1914 (just before the outbreak of WW1). His family was to follow soon after but were not able to because of the war. They eventually got to NZ in 1920 on the Athenic. Sadly, Henry died in 1922, leaving a widow and four children.
My father was Harry, the eldest; the others were Don, Eleanor, and Ernest. Eleanor, the last to die, died only this year. They used to love remembering their early childhood in Ireland. I have written down a lot of those early memories.

For the past 5-6 years, I have been researching the Hutchison family from the Belfast area. Because the family was poor and uneducated, there is very little info on them. Maybe their vital stats were burned in the 1922 fire. The three members that migrated to N. America claim to be from the "Belfast" area however there is nothing simple in pinpointing a district, parish,
etc. I continue to search and wish I could go to the graveyards.

My father, John Conley, served with the 8th Belfast HAA Regiment in Burma. I found the site amazing, and I was able to view unseen photographs of my dad. Sadly, he passed away in 1955, aged just 45 years old. He left my mother, sadly also now passed away, (1998) with myself and two older sisters to bring up. I wish my mother could have seen the site and the pictures. Thank you for doing so much wonderful work to keep the memory of my dad, and so many like him, alive. I salute you.

The name was misspelled so many different ways when the families immigrated to North America. I've got Sarah Lennon born c1841 Ireland.
She married Patrick Sherlock 11 Feb 1854 in St. Andrew, Westland Row, Dublin.
The only possibility I've found so far for Sarah in Ireland is from the IGI
Sarah Jane Lennon born 27 Apr 1841 Ballygowan, Antrim, Ireland.
At the moment I don't know what records are available in Ireland so I'm up against a brick wall.

you have solved a family mystery! My great grandfather and great grand aunt seemingly lived at either 122 Castlereagh Road or 122 Ellenborough Terrace.

I found that Ellenborough Terrace is/was a terrace on Castlereagh Road so both addresses are for the same house!

I think my family must have lived there much later than 1907 - certainly Martha Morton aka Dobson was there in 1920 and her brother John Cosgrove died there in 1921.

I have come across an Indian silver highly decorated plate engraved on the reverse with " 1877, Gulmurg local handicap, CHOCOLATE ridden by Major Auchinleck" Gulmurg was later changed to gulmarg. I note the Major Thomas Auchinleck , JP, DL, on your site of Crevenagh house, Omagh in 1880. If anyone is researching the family and is interested, please get in touch.

Excellent discovery - My Grandparents (Sarah and Tom Ferguson) lived at No. 22 Sevastopol Street up until the early 1950s. When my parents Phyllis & Hugh Ferguson took over the residence at No 22 Sevastopol St.

From my early childhood memories I can recall the surnames of some long term residents (and their descendants) of Sevastopol St, those are the names dating back to the era of 1907 you have listed ie. Joyce and Crossey who lived at numbers 38 and 40 respectively.

I lived there from 1955 to 1976 when I emigrated to Australia.

I think your site is terrific. All my Ancestors came from Ireland.
Adams were Protestant (I believe arriving in Ireland around the time of the Plantation period) My Gr Gr Gr Grandfather was in the 57th Irish Fusiliers and after finishing service in India returned and lived in Cavan until about 1860 when the family shifted to Liverpool. My Mothers side were Irish Catholics with Surname of Brady and King. They were born in and around Limerick and Dublin. I am finding this section very hard to trace even here in Australia. So thank you for your site it has given me lots of ideas.

I found Stanhope st no 31 my grandmother lived there and was married from that house in1906 her name was Annie Luby also Maggie Sheriden lived in the same st she married Thomas Craig from hail st I cant find any thing about where she was born please help she had a brother called john at this address he also lived in 6 Catherine court before he died

I worked in the post office in Belfast for many years starting as a telegram boy. Whilst going through the street directories it brought back lots of memories of streets with half-doors, houses up entries, they are long since gone. I wish that I had photographed these sights of Old Belfast. My ancestors lived in Round entry and that neighbourhood in 1820s, They were born, baptised and married there and St. Patrick's R.C. Donegal Street. My grandfather and his brother both died 1918, WW1. In the space of 10 years, my grandfather lost his mother,3 sisters,1 brother, a son and daughter and 2 nephews, all from 9, Fort Street. I am still finding ancestors in your directories it is absolutely brilliant, Many thanks, a great genealogy site.

A lot of time and dedication has obviously been put into this and I'm sure all users of your site appreciate the information that it offers to complete strangers. It has helped me pin down old rellies as they seem to have moved around Belfast, though one address appears to have been central. It looks like my Boyds and McClintons in the Shankill all got houses by other family members dying !!!!

Just found this website today... will take awhile to explore. Searching for relatives from County Down & Belfast area... Williamson, Creighton, Jameson, Ferris. Believe my great-grandmother, Mildred Ferris Williamson, was cousin to Olympian Samuel Ferris. Another Ferris owned a large linen mill in Belfast in the 50s ?. Mildred Ferris Williamson, her husband & children, as well as her sisters emigrated to Canada around 1912, then settled in Rochester NY. Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you. Happy Easter.

ound my great grandfather who had a butchers shop in Chatham Street , he was married to a woman called Tutty whose family had dairies in Dublin.

The lived in Donnybrock up until the 1940s in beever Row .

Interesting site do you have any details about Kildare street as I had a relative who used to run a garage called the Shelbourne Motor Company before the Hotel used to use it for garaging their cars

My father William Adrain was a Sgt. in the 21st battery 8th Belfast HAA and won the MM in the battle of the Admin Box in the Arakan, Feb,1944.
I have his diary of the battle containing the names of the dead and wounded.
He died in April 1984 40 years after the Admin Box.

Thank you for your wonderful, informative site. I have only recently discovered that my g-g-g-grandfather, Robert McMullen, came from Magherafelt. He arrived in Canada circa 1818, secured a large parcel of land just south of Ottawa, Ontario in Oxford-on-Rideau and may have returned to Ireland to marry, since he and his young family arrived to occupy the land several years later. He served in His Majesty's 47th Regiment of Foot, but I know virtually nothing yet of his life or the family prior to their arrival in Canada.

Anyway, I now look forward to continuing my search...

elp! I desperately need some help in finding details about 'Forthill, Groomsport, Co. Down'. My family have had a small cottage there for 45 years. I was given a link to this page by a fellow chatter, who knows that I am trying to research the Wylie branch of my tree. I have a marriage for JAMES WILEY and MARIA NICHOLL, in 1851, at Newtonhamilton. James and Maria were my ggg grandparents. Their son, Joseph, was my gg grandfather. I couldn't help but notice that your last name is Wiley. I am researching your (our) family name and will be visiting Northern Ireland the last week in September of this year. I have been told (via family history) that my people are from Belfast and (from the internet) more specifically from the Portglenone area. Are we by any chance related? I have been trying to trace both my paternal and maternal family trees. At the moment I am concentrating on the paternal side of the family. As far back as I have discovered they originally came from the Hillsborough area - names: Hanna/Eccles/Wilson, and from Belfast - names: Caves/Shaw/Stewart.
