all these photos and Harrys medals were donated to the Kohima Museum in York by Harrys son Colin Mawhinney, Colin very kindly scanned and sent me the photos for inclusion on this site.    Bob Cook is the curator of the Kohima Museum and it is thanks to him for putting Colin in touch with me.  Kohima Museum is on Facebook here and here and the website

 L/Bdr. Harold Joseph Mawhinney
 8th Belfast HAA - 22nd Battery

Harold Joseph Mawhinney was born 4th July 1910, he was the youngest of 7 children born to James and Isabella in the Duncairn district of Belfast.

He worked for many years as an Insurance agent for the "City of Glasgow" company just off High Street in Belfast city centre.

He was happily married to Mona, they had a son Colin James in 1954. Harry was the Treasurer of the Burma Star Association in N. Ireland for several years and was proud of his service and that of his comrades.

Due to failing health he was forced to retire early and died 20th February 1977 after a long illness.

His coffin was draped in the Burma Star standard and carried by his comrades. Harry is sadly missed by his loving wife and son

A brave and loyal man whose values and morals are still held dear by his son.  - Colin Mawhinney
