County Down

     A charming watering place on the shores of Dundrum Bay, about 30 miles distant from Belfast. Slieve Donard, the loftiest peak of the Mourne Mountains, lies in the background. The Royal County Down Golf Links are convenient to the town. The population in 1939 was 2,431. Shops' half-holiday, Thursday.

     This populous and prosperous town, the capital of the Ards district, is situated about ten miles from Belfast, and at the Northern extremity of Strangford Lough.  The leading industries of the town are weaving, bleaching, embroidery, hemstitching, printing, and finishing of handkerchiefs.  There are excellent markets under the management of the Borough Council.  A fair is held on the second Saturday of each month, and patent fairs on January 23rd, May 14th, and Sept. 23rd.  The Population at census of 1937 was 10,546. Newtownards is one of two civil airports in Ulster, and is a recognised customs aerodrome. Shops' half-holiday, Thursday
