CARRICKFERGUS
County Antrim

An ancient market town, is most pleasantly situated on the north shore of Belfast Lough, ten miles from Belfast.  It was formerly a place of great strength, and is rendered memorable by the fact that it was there King William III disembarked in 1690, previous to the battle of the Boyne - at the east pier may still be seen the stone on which he is reputed to have landed.  Carrickfergus Castle is a conspicuous landmark on the sea front. Before the advent of modern artillery it was an important stronghold, having withstood many sieges. Its history dates back several centuries. It is now in the possession of the Government of Northern Ireland as an ancient monument, and is likely to become a national museum. The parish church of St. Nicholas is one of the most interesting buildings in Ireland, and its history can be traced by pillars and other features from the time of the Normans. Salt was discovered in 1851, and more recently at Eden, a village about one mile distant. Several mines are now being worked in the neighbourhood, and these together with their products form a valuable asset towards the prosperity of the town. Other industries are spinning, weaving, bleaching, print, dye and brick works. The harbour affords good accommodation for shipping. The population in 1937 was 4,339. Shops' half-holiday, Wednesday.

CASTLEDERG
County Tyrone

The town of Castlederg stands on the banks of the River Derg, and is situated in the centre of a thriving and prosperous agricultural neighbourhood, twenty miles distant from Londonderry, ten from Strabane, and seven from Victoria Bridge.  An important horse, cattle, and general fair is held on the last Friday in each month, and a market is held every Friday.  The population is 934, but as a place of business it is of much more importance than the number of inhabitants would indicate.  It is connected with the Great Northern Railway system at Victoria Bridge Station (seven miles distant) by a bus service.
